Mumbai, July 23: Microsoft had a massive outage worldwide when the window crashed due to an update related to the CrowdStrike Falcon antivirus. The Microsoft outage resulted in people seeing a Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) error on their systems. The global IT outage showed that the tech giant Microsoft faced security challenges. Due to this error, many netizens took on X and other platforms reporting the BSOD error, tagging Microsoft and its CEO Satya Nadella.

According to a report by The Wall Street Journal, millions of people were affected by the Windows crash. The report said that the Blue Screen of Death error has been a "dreaded" symbol of technological failure since Microsoft became dominant in its Windows operating systems in the 1990s. Macrumors reported, "CrowdStrike's Falcon security is a kernel module, which gives the software full access to the PC." The report also mentioned that the kernel managed the systems' processes, files, memory, and devices. Kernel mode access could cause a complete system failure. The massive IT outage affected several industries, including airlines, healthcare, commerce, and even some government agencies.

According to WSJ, Microsoft blamed the European Union for the Windows crash that caused the global IT outage. The tech giant said the EU could not offer the same protections the Mac systems had. The company said that it could not shield its operating system due to an "understanding" with the European Union. Microsoft agreed to provide kernel access to resolve European competition law issues. The tech giant had already agreed to the interoperability rules back in 2009. YouTube Down in India: After Microsoft Outage, Netizens Report About Facing Issues Uploading Videos, Share Funny Memes

The report said that Microsoft could not prevent the same error from happening again and could not cut off the kernel access. The report highlighted that Apple had not been forced to change the workings on Macs, but the EU targeted iOS due to its closed nature. The Digital Markets Act 2023 stated that the developers could offer their apps through third-party marketplaces and websites on the official company software or app store. Apple reportedly said that the new DMA compromised its ability to detect, prevent and take required actions against the malicious apps.
