New Delhi, May 13: Microsoft, the tech giant, has been ordered to pay a sum of USD 242 million to IPA Technologies for infringing on a patent related to voice recognition technology. The ruling came from a federal jury in the US state of Delaware. IPA Technologies, a subsidiary of Wi-LAN, acquired the patent from SRI International's Siri Inc. in 2010. Microsoft's Cortana virtual assistant software was found to have violated this patent, leading to a financial penalty for Apple.

After a week-long trial, the decision went in favour of IPA and determined that Microsoft had breached IPA's patent rights on its voice recognition technology for computer communication software. However, Microsoft argued that it did not infringe upon any of IPA's patents. This case illustrates the complex legal battles that often emerge in intellectual property laws and technological advancements.

It was in 2018 when IPA filed lawsuits against Microsoft alleging infringement of its personal digital assistant's patents as well as those relating to voice-based data navigation. Many different IPA patents were initially challenged, but later, they were cut down to focus on one specific IPA patent.
