New Delhi, August 17: Microsoft has reportedly announced an important update for Windows 11 users by making BitLocker device encryption the default option. The change is expected to enhance security for all Windows 11 users, including those running the Home version. By making BitLocker a default feature, Microsoft will likely safeguard user’s sensitive information from unauthorised access. Users might no longer need to meet specific hardware security test requirements for encryption.

It means that users may not need separate encryption software. The upcoming update removes previous hardware restrictions and makes BitLocker accessible to more devices, including those running Windows 11 Home. As per reports, the encryption process no longer relies on a Hardware Security Test Interface (HSTI) or Modern Standby. It will be enabled even if untrusted third-party hardware device interfaces are detected. To enable device encryption, users should sign in with a Microsoft account. If a new machine is set up with a local account, users will be prompted to switch to a Microsoft account to finish the encryption process. It is important to back up the BitLocker recovery key, a 48-digit numerical password, as it will be needed to prevent if any unauthorised access is detected or hardware changes occur. BitLocker can also be manually enabled or disabled through the BitLocker Control Panel.
