Microsoft Cloud Outage Impacts Operations of Airlines, Forces Companies to Ground and Cancel Flights
Microsoft cloud outage reportedly caused airlines to ground their flight immediately and also led to cancellation of some flights. The Microsoft's cloud outage termed "major Microsoft technical outage" impacted the flight operations of the Frontier Airlines.
San Francisco, July 19: Microsoft's cloud outage related to Microsoft Azure caused the airlines to ground the flights and cancel several. Taking note of this issue, Microsoft reportedly said that it was investigating the problem with cloud services in the U.S. region, which caused the cancellation of low-cost carrier Frontier Airlines. Termed as a "major Microsoft technical outage", the cloud outage temporarily affected the airlines' operations.
According to a report by Reuters, Microsoft said that the cloud outage resulted in some airlines operating in the United States to ground their flights. The report mentioned that the low-cost carriers Frontier Airlines, Allegiant and SunCountry, reported the outage, which affected the airline's operations. Frontier Airlines said normal operations were resumed, and the ground stop was lifted. Adding more details, the Economic Times reported that the Allegiant website was unavailable due to Microsoft Azure issues. SunCountry reportedly said that the Microsoft Cloud outage affected booking and check-in facilities. Due to the Microsoft Cloud outage, Frontier Airlines had to cancel 147 flights on July 16, and the company delayed 212 flights. The data provided by FlightAware showed that 45% of Allegiant flights and 23% of SunCountry flights were also delayed due to the issues.
Microsoft confirmed that the cloud outage began at 6 PM ET (Eastern Time) on July 18, leading to customers in the Central U.S. region experiencing issues with various cloud services of Microsoft Azure. Besides, Microsoft said it would probe into the problems that impacted several Microsoft 365 apps and services. Besides this incident, multiple users reported a Microsoft Windows 11 crash on X that showed a blue screen error. The message on the blue screen said that the Windows would restart automatically after collecting some information.
