James Cameron Joins Stability AI Board, Avatar Director To ‘Unlock New Ways for Artists To Tell Stories’ With GenAI and CGI: Report

Avatar and Titanic director joined Stability AI board to visually transform the ways to tell the stories using computer-generated imagery (CGI) and genAI.

New York, September 25: James Cameron, a world-renowned Hollywood director known for movies like Avatar, Titanic, Terminator series and many other sci-fi movies, has reportedly joined the Stability AI board. The Hollywood director has joined the AI company to transform the "visual media" by providing the creators with a full portfolio of AI tools. The rise of genAI has sparked interest in the American film industry. 

According to a report by Reuters, since OpenAI Sora was unveiled in February, with its ability to generate high-quality videos from text prompts, Hollywood executives and agents have met with the company and talked about the potential uses of AI technology. The report said that James Cameron's appointment to the Stability AI board would take this goal of the filmmakers further. The rivals OpenAI, Microsoft, Google, xAI and Meta have announced their plans for the future and how they would proceed to offer products powered by generative artificial intelligence. London-based Stability AI reportedly raised around USD 80 million in funding earlier this year. In 2022, the firm had raised about USD 101 million in a seed round with a USD 1 billion valuation.

Stability AI already offers its AI video generation tool called "Stable Video Diffusion", which was introduced in November 2023. It offers 2-5 seconds of video with 30 fps to the users. With James Cameron, Stability AI also appointed Sean Parker,  former Facebook President, on board. The report highlighted that Hollywood and AI had been struggling as the writers and actors feared to seek the protection of their crafts and images from the "unregulated use of AI', causing a strike in 2023.
