Mumbai, August 14: Aaranyak, North India's non-profit organisation, launched a mobile app called 'HaatiApp' that tracks incoming herds of wild elephants to reduce the encounter of these giant animals with humans. Assam, an Indian state with the second-largest population of elephants, is often in the headlines about having violent attacks on humans by these animals. Several incidents of elephants attacking humans can be found in Assam, where the victims suffered from major injuries or were killed.
North India's premier NPO 'Aaranyak' developed an app that could help humans be alert about the upcoming herd of wild elephants and may save their lives. Called 'HaatiApp', this mobile application was launched in Assam to track wild elephant movements and send out warnings to users if they are near a collision. The mobile app and its handbook were inaugurated by Minister of Power of Assam Nandita Gorlosa. The reports said that elephant attacks had been on the rise in Assam, leading to death and destruction. The report said that from 2017 to 2022, there were several incidents of deaths of humans and elephants. It said 200 elephants and 400 humans died during the timeframe. It also said that the elephants were becoming more aggressive and violently attacking humans.
With the help of HaatiApp, the residents can report sightings of the elephants, deaths, casualties, crop damages, property damages and more. Aaranyak said that the residents could claim the damages from the government using an in-app form. The organisation said, "The filled-up ex-gratia application form will be submitted to the respective Forest Divisions by Aaranyak on behalf of the victims of the HEC so as to compliment the Forest Department's efforts to pay compensation. The organisation said it adopted a citizen-science approach and launched a mobile application, HaatiApp, with the objective of reducing the HEC (Human-Elephant Conflict). In addition to the app, the organisation launched solar-powered fences to mitigate the conflict.
