Google’s Android 9 Pie Launched; Here Are the Features and List of Compatible Devices for the New OS
The latest Android 9 Pie update will be received first by Google Pixel, and manufacturers like Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, HMD Global, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Essential will receive the update by the end of the year.
Google has surprised us with the release of its much-awaited Android P OS. Released today, the new OS has finally unveiled its name -- Pie. The Android 9 Pie will first feature on the Google Pixel phones from today onwards. The other smartphone manufacturers, who joined the Android P beta program, will be getting the new Android P by the end of this fall. Among the waiting list of manufacturers are Android One devices, Sony Mobile, Xiaomi, HMD Global, Oppo, Vivo, OnePlus, and Essential.
The new Android 9 packs quite a lot of features from UI to system stability. Starting with the new UI, Google has made the notification bar adaptable to the notch and full display smartphones, since the future devices will be tailored in that manner. The Adaptive Brightness feature will automatically adjust your screen brightness as per the surrounding’s lighting. The Adaptive Battery will let you have more battery life as it will learn which apps are used more frequently and disable the ones which are not in use. The new navigation bar, which does away with the legacy of the three symbols, will let you swipe through recently used apps and the home page, and also help you go back to the previous page. With the new Do Not Disturb (DND) option, users can achieve blissful sleep by setting the phone on silent from all the notifications and thereby turning the device’s screen to greyscale.
Exclusively for Pixel devices, Android Pie OS has introduced Digital Wellbeing Beta Preview, which is aimed to give users a complete picture of their digital habits and to help them disconnect when they want to. Currently, the beta programme is only applicable for Pixel users who have received the new Android 9 update. Google states that it will roll out this feature in the upcoming update.
Other features on the Android 9 Pie include multiple Bluetooth connections, app dashboard, Wind Down, Accessibility Menu, work tab in the launcher and Postpone Over-the-air (OTA) updates among others.
