New Delhi, September 18: Google is reportedly planning to introduce a new technology to help users identify AI-generated and edited images to provide more transparency in its search results. As per a report of India Today, Google will let users verify AI-generated images and videos in search results to offer greater transparency. The company is reportedly planning to introduce a feature called "About this image," which will provide more detailed information about an image’s origin. As per multiple reports, Google intends to implement a system that is part of the Coalition for Content Provenance and Authenticity (C2PA). The C2PA authentication system is a technical standard aimed at tracking the source of images. It does this by creating a digital trail that offers details about where an image was taken and any changes that have been made to it afterwards.

The technology can determine if an image was captured with a camera or altered using photo editing software like Photoshop, or created by generative AI models. Reports also suggest that tech companies such as Google, Microsoft, Amazon, Adobe, Arm, OpenAI, Intel, and Truepic have all supported the C2PA authentication system. Google has played an active role in creating the most recent version of the C2PA technical standard, known as version 2.1. The collaboration among major tech firms highlights the importance of establishing reliable methods for verifying the authenticity of digital content.
