California, May 4: Sexually explicit ads have already been limited by Google up to an extent through its advertising policies and guidelines. However, despite Googles' stand against pornographic advertisements, the company has not outright banned advertisers from promoting the pornographic ads. Many people have been using Deepfake porn and another type of generated nude images for a long; however, that will change from the company's updated policy.
Google's Advertising policy on 'Inappropriate Content' currently prohibits advertisers from promoting ads that include dangerous or derogatory content, sexually explicit content, compensated sexual acts, child sexual abuse imagery, mail-order brides, adult themes in family content, and other types of content on animal cruelty, politics, or sensitive events. Google has announced an update to its policy prohibiting the promotion of synthetic content generated or altered to be sexually explicit and will have nudity. According to the new 'Update to Inappropriate Content Policy (May 2024)' policy, the example would include "sites or apps that claim to generate deepfake pornography, instructions on how to create deepfake pornography, endorsing or comparing deepfake pornography services" This new policy update will be enforced from May 30, 2024.
Google said that it would consider the violation of this policy seriously and egregious. The tech giant said that if it finds a violation of this new policy update, it will lead to the Google Ads account suspension without prior warning. The company also warned that the users who get their Google Ads accounts suspended will not be able to advertise with it again. The company suggested reviewing the 'Update to Inappropriate Content Policy (May 2024)' policy and removing ads that fall under its scope before May 30, 2024. According to the report by The Verge, nonconsensual deepfake pornography has been a consistent problem in recent years, and there were two middle schoolers arrested over creating the nudes of their classmates. Another 57-year-old man from Pittsburgh had been processing deep fake child sexual abuse material, and he was sentenced to prison for 14 years. The report highlighted that the house already introduced the "DEFIANCE Act" last month, which would assist victims to sue those who make or contribute such "nonconsensual deepfakes".
