San Francisco, June 1: Google Cloud, a cloud computing unit of tech giant Google, has reportedly laid off several employees this week. The Google Cloud layoffs have affected an unspecified number of employees. The unit reportedly informed the employees about the job cuts through an internal document. After DeepMind, Google Cloud is the second unit affected by the tech layoffs in 2024. The layoffs at Google Cloud reportedly affected the 'Go To Market' and other teams. 

Business Insider reported that it reviewed an internal document, and the layoffs were confirmed by an employee at the Google Cloud unit who chose to remain anonymous. The report further said that one employee informed that the Google Cloud layoffs likely affected 100 employees of the unit's GTM group in the Asia-Pacific region. It highlighted that the layoffs affected the employees working in consulting, partner engineering and sustainability the most. Tech Layoffs: Indian IT Sector Hit by Silent Layoffs With Employee Asked To Choose Voluntary Resignation or Termination, Affects Over 20,000 People, Says Report.

According to the report, Google's unit laid off some recently hired employees, including at least one new recruit who had not yet completed the onboarding process. However, Google Cloud also allowed the affected to find new roles within the unit. The report highlighted that a Google spokesperson shared about the unit's plan to evolve the business to meet the customers' priorities and significant future opportunities. In 2024, tech layoffs have been concerning, especially due to multiple factors such as the adoption of automation and AI, business restructuring and the global economic downturn affecting the industry. Google Cloud layoffs could have affected a small number of the staff, but they still are concerning to the tech industry. The report mentioned that Google had also cut a 'small number' of employees in its global affairs early in May 2024, as per Google's global affairs chief's email copy sent to staff.
