New Delhi, August 30: Google has reportedly updated its AI image generation tool, Gemini, following criticism over its harmful depictions in generated photos. The tool, which is part of Google’s AI efforts, came under criticism after it was found to produce images that were deemed inappropriate and offensive.

The backlash was considerable enough that Google CEO Sundar Pichai reportedly apologised, calling the issue "completely unacceptable." Google has now addressed the problem and is making certain upgrades so that Gemini’s image generation capabilities align with the company’s standards and community guidelines. Google Faces Antitrust Lawsuit From Yelp Alleging Search Engine Monopoly.

As per a report of Times Now, Google fixes photo issues in its AI to Gemini by restoring its image generation feature for select users. The decision followed a suspension of the feature that began in February when the tool generated images that were not only historically inaccurate but also racially insensitive.

Earlier, when creating images of a Roman legion, Gemini often depicted them as racially diverse, while its portrayals of Zulu warriors leaned heavily into stereotypes. The backlash led Google to pause the feature and work on improvements. Now, Google has reintroduced the image generation feature with new safeguards to prevent similar problems in the future.

The update is expected that Gemini now adheres to stricter guidelines and minimising the risk of generating offensive images in the future. Google will be gradually introducing the new update starting with users who have subscribed to the Gemini Advanced product. As per multiple reports, Dave Citron, who is a senior director at Google, said that the company has made big improvements in generating images with the Imagen 3 model. Google has taken steps to make sure that this feature is used responsibly by making technical improvements, conducting thorough testing and providing clear guidelines. Although the system may not be perfect, Citron emphasised that Google is making it better based on feedback from users.
