Dublin, August 7: Elon Musk's X platform has been taken to court in Ireland for allegedly misusing the data of European users to train the Grok AI chatbot without their permission. This comes as the tech billionaire's xAI company is preparing to introduce Grok 2 this month. Elon Musk's social platform X announced the decision to use users' data to train its AI chatbot without asking for consent.
Previously, OpenAI faced legal consequences for using the articles of news media companies, and Mark Zuckerberg's Meta AI announced its plans to train the artificial intelligence chatbots using the personal data of the users. According to a report by TechCrunch, Elon Musk's X platform made a move that surprised the Irish Data Protection Commission (DPC). Further, to process the data of the people, the pan-EU GDPR requires permission and has a legal basis for it. Under the breach of the regime, GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) could impose penalties on up to 4% of companies for their gross annual turnover. The report highlighted that if there were any confirmed non-compliance for Elon Musk's X platform, it would also end up being costly. It further mentioned that the Irish Data Protection Commission would seek an official order from the court against "Twitter International". An injunction will be sought over concerns about processing people's data to train the Grok AI model. The Irish DPC would reportedly take this matter to the European Data Protection Board (EDPB). The report said that the EDPB supervisory body under the Data Protection Commission could issue guidance on pan-EU law applications. DPC reportedly will sue Elon Musk's X under Ireland's 2018 Data Protection Act.
