New Delhi, August 5: Neuralink, the brain-chip company owned by Elon Musk, has reportedly implanted its brain chip in a second human patient. The development highlights the goal of Neuralink, which is to enable individuals who are paralysed to control digital devices using their thoughts. Neuralink technology is said to reduce the gap between the human brain and digital devices by allowing people with paralysis to gain control and interact with technology to improve the quality of life and offer new possibilities for communication and interaction.
As per a report of The Guardian, Neuralink has implanted its brain chip in a second trial patient. The development follows the company's initial human trial and its further test the chip's effectiveness and safety. Neuralink's brain chip is intended to assist patients with neurological disorders to enabling direct communication between the brain and external devices. The successful implantation in the second patient is expected to provide more data on the chip's performance and its benefits. Noland Arbaugh was the first patient to receive the Neuralink implant in January. After the implant, Arbaugh's experience has changed. Now, he can think about what he wants to do on the computer screen and the device connected to his brain makes it happen. According to reports, the second patient who received the Neuralink implant had a spinal cord injury similar to the first patient who became paralysed in a diving accident. During a podcast, Elon Musk did not reveal the specific date when the second patient underwent surgery for the Neuralink implant. The first patient, Noland Arbaugh, was interviewed on the podcast, along with three Neuralink executives. They provided information into the functioning of the implant and the surgical procedure, which was performed using a robot. The Neuralink implant consists of 1,024 electrodes. Elon Musk has reportedly mentioned that 400 electrodes are functioning properly in the second patient's brain.
