Elon Musk-Run X Updates Its Privacy Policy To Allow 3rd Parties To Train AI Models; Check Details
Elon Musk's platform, X, updates its privacy policy to enable third parties to train AI models with its data.
New Delhi, October 18: Elon Musk-run X (formerly Twitter) has reportedly updated its privacy policy to allow third parties to train AI models using data collected from its platform. The new X privacy policy, which reportedly mentions third-party access, has raised questions about how user data will be managed and utilised in this context. The policy change is a major shift for X, particularly in how data will be shared for AI training purposes.
As per a report of Engadget, X's updated privacy policy now allows third parties to use data from the platform to train AI models. It means information shared on X, such as posts, interactions, and other activities, could be used in these training processes. The shift raises concerns about privacy and data use. The new privacy policy for X is set to come into effect on November 15, 2024. The new policy appears to open the way for new arrangements, where external companies may have the opportunity to pay for access to data from X. The change suggests that X is exploring the possibility of licensing its data to other firms, like Reddit and several media organisations, according to a report of TechCrunch. This step could represent a new source of revenue for the platform.
Although the new policy is scheduled to take effect in next month, there remains a possibility that it could be changed before its implementation. In the revised Privacy Policy in Section 3, which is labelled “Sharing Information,” X has included a new paragraph that outlines the ways in which user data may be utilised. Additionally, it provides information on how users can choose to opt out of certain data-sharing practices. It may enhance transparency regarding data usage and user control over their personal information. The "Third-party collaborators" section in X Privacy Policy reads, “Depending on your settings, or if you decide to share your data, we may share or disclose your information with third parties. If you do not opt out, in some instances the recipients of the information may use it for their own independent purposes in addition to those stated in X’s Privacy Policy, including, for example, to train their artificial intelligence models, whether generative or otherwise.“
