Round Rock, August 12: This week, Dell announced a massive layoff round that estimated to hit around 12,500 employees across the world from several teams. The goal of Dell layoffs was to simplify operations and reimagine the work and customer experience with the help of AI. The layoff memo was circulated by Dell executives letting the workers know about company's plan. The Dell layoffs were estimated to affect around 10% of the global employees.
According to a report by Business Insider, Dell employees were not surprised by the announcement of layoffs due to the integration of artificial intelligence. The job cuts reportedly targeted the majority of the sales staff from the global workforce. The report mentioned that some of the workers believed that they would continue laying off employees across the quarter amid Dell's attempt to reduce the workforce due to AI integration. Dell's spokesperson reportedly clarified to BI that the company's reorganisation efforts would make it leaner. The news media company asked around 10 workers about the ongoing Dell layoffs, and they described the work slowdowns and other effects of the decision. A couple of workers described the layoffs as "horrible short-term for morale" and "a bit of dumpster fire."
In the AI race where majority of the company have started their efforts to stand out in the market, Dell also began experimenting with AI from October 2023. The report highlighted that artificial intelligence technology was applied to several areas of the company, such as product development, sales tools, content management, and customer service.
Putting its plan into action, Dell adopted AI for the workplace and has been pushing the strategy for making staff more efficient. By implementing the new AI strategy, the roles that are mundane usually become redundant. A worker affected by the job cuts expected the company to lay off workers as it worked on making all support AI-focused. The person further added that over 60 people were laid off from the team. The worker said, "I'd rather be let go with a package than quit."
