Mumbai, August 7: Dell has laid off nearly 12,500 employees in its largest job cut round affecting its global workforce. The tech giant announced the layoffs through an internal memo on August 6, 2024 which hinted at 10% of the global workforce would be impacted. Dell Technologies has reduced the majority of the people across its sales division in its latest round. The job cuts were considered part of the company's technology to modernise operations and focus on artificial intelligence.
The reports said that the exact number was not known, but an estimated 12,500 employees were laid off. In 2023, Dell Technologies reportedly laid off 13,000 people. Now, it is the second major blow in the global tech industry after Intel announced massive job cuts. Two senior executives, Bill Scannell and John Bayne, circulated an internal memo titled "Global Sales Modernization Update" in the company. This memo included the company's decision to streamline its operations with a prime focus on AI. The memo said that the company was "getting leaner," streamlining the layers of management, and reprioritising its investments.
What Did Employees Say About Dell Layoffs?
The report by Business Insider suggested that the sales team was largely affected by the decision to reduce the workforce. The report mentioned that one of the employees said that Dell layoffs targeted managers, senior managers, directors and VPs, and the marketing and operations team. The anonymous employee further said that the company combined organisations and raised the ratio for the managers, leaving them with a minimum of 15 employees. Highlighting Dell firing thousands, another employee said managers working for a long time with the tech company were let go. The employee said it showed that no matter how much effort one puts into one's job, the sooner you help the bottom line, the more your job is compromised. Other employees said things like "largest cut in history coming this summer", "too many middle management", and "every six months, we have layoffs". An individual said there would be no opportunity for employees to move up as he had been looking for other jobs outside Dell for nine months and still hadn't landed one.
