Mumbai, May 16: Leading IT company Cognizant started informing its employees that they will be fired if they did not come to the office, as per its return-to-office policy. According to a report, Cognizant made it clear that the employee ignoring the reminders and company's directives should return to the office. The company reportedly said that the employees would have to return to the office; otherwise, they could face severe disciplinary actions and even get terminated.
The report by MoneyControl said that the IT company Cognizant warned its employees they would face termination if they did not follow the company's diktat to return to the office. The report highlighted that the company has already sent repeated reminders to the employees regarding this. It said that Cognizant sent a letter on April 15, 2024, asking employees who did not return to the office despite warnings given by the company in earlier communications from leaders about the in-office expectations. Cognizant, in its letter, reportedly warned employees that failure to comply with the company's directives would be considered 'serious misconduct' under its policies. The company further stated that 'appropriate disciplinary action' would be taken, which could potentially lead to termination. The report mentioned the seriousness of the situation and the importance of adhering to the company's policies.
The report highlighted that the IT firm had around 2,54,000 employees based in India and employed a total workforce of 3,47,700. It said that such a huge number would make Cognizant one of the largest employers. During the Covid-19 pandemic, many companies in the information technology sector allowed employees to continue working from home until the lockdown was over and everything got back to normal conditions. However, some companies still allowed the employees to work from home after pandemic was over. Now, due to multiple issues related to work coordination, failing to meet clients' commitment and decreasing performance, the other companies like Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), Wipro and Infosys already started calling employees back to adopt new five-days-week schedule. Last year, HCTech made it compulsory for the employees to work minimum three days in a week. We also saw that e-commerce giant also made it strict for all the employees to follow work from office or face termination. Google also told the employees to adjust to the work from office policy requiring to come to the office three days a week.
