New Delhi, August 12: A recent surge in GPS spoofing incidents is reportedly affecting commercial airliners, raising serious concerns about aviation cybersecurity. As per reports, the cyberattacks are creating fake GPS signals, which is leading to disruptions in the navigation systems of airplanes. The situation can be troubling as commercial planes depend on GPS for safe and effective navigation. The attacks of GPS spoofing are a major threat to aviation safety highlighting the need for cyber security measures in the aviation industry promptly.

As per a report of Business Today, new cyberattacks can create fake GPS signals for disrupting the navigation systems of commercial airplanes. This is a form of cyber attack in which GPS signals received by the aircraft are distorted, referred to as GPS spoofing. Hackers have become more advanced in their ways of interfering with the commercial plane’s navigation systems by making use of counterfeit GPS signals. GPS spoofing is when someone sends fake GPS signals to an aircraft. It makes the aircraft to think it is in a different place than it actually is. The use of fake GPS signals to interfere with commercial airplane navigation systems by hackers can cause significant risk as commercial flights as they depend on accurate GPS data to operate safely and smoothly. According to reports, in April, Finnair had to temporarily stop flights to the city of Tartu in Estonia because of GPS spoofing.  As per a report of Business Standard, there has been a significant increase of 400 percent in GPS spoofing incidents. These incidents have been affecting commercial airliners in recent months, as reported by OPSGROUP, an aviation advisory body.
