Apple Open Source AI Model ‘OpenELM’ Unveiled Ahead of 'Let Loose' Event on May 7, Could Power On-Device Artificial Intelligence; Know More Details
Apple launched its OpenELM AI models family that could be used for on-device artificial intelligence processing on iPhone, iPad and iMac. Apple Open-Source Efficient Language Models or OpenELM could reportedly carry out small tasks efficiently on the device.
Mumbai, April 25: Apple CEO Tim Cook recently announced the "Let Loose" event will take place on May 7, 2024. The Apple WWDC 2024 is also scheduled to start June 10 to June 14, 2024. During the Let Loose event, Apple was expected to introduce AI-powered features and its new iPad Pro, iPad Air, and iOS 18 update. Ahead of all these events, Apple launched a new AI model, OpenELM, that may power iOS 18 on iPhones.
Apple Machine Learning Research published a post announcing a state-of-the-art open language model with enhanced accuracy. The Apple OpenELM offers accuracy while requiring two times fewer pre-training tokens. Apple also released code to convert models to the MLX library to fine-tune on Apple devices. The Apple OpenELM includes four lightweight AI models available on the Hugging Face model library. These small AI models do not rely on the cloud to perform but rather work on-device. OpenELM will likely be introduced in Apple products such as iPhones, iMac and iPads, bringing on-device AI to the users. Recently, Microsoft Phi-3, a cost-effective SLM (small language model), promised to outperform the LLMs on different benchmarks. The Apple OpenELM release claims to empower and strengthen the open research community for future endeavours.
With the introduction of Apple's Open-Source Efficient Language Models, the tech giant entered the long-running AI race. However, it should be understood that Apple's entry into the artificial intelligence market was late. The other tech companies like Microsoft, OpenAI and Meta already dominate the market with their models, and they are improving. Apple OpenELM Vs Microsoft Phi-3 and Google Gemma
According to a report by The Verge, the Apple OpenELM come in four parameter sizes - 270 million, 450 million, 1.1 billion and 3 billion. The report said the parameter meant the models' capability to understand the variable in decision-making. If we compare it with Microsoft Phi-3, it boasted 3.8 billion parameters, and another small model, Gemma from Google, had 2 billion parameters. The report highlighted that such small models are affordable, easy to run, and optimised for laptops and smartphones.
