Cupertino, June 25: Apple announced its partnership with Microsoft-backed OpenAI for ChatGPT integration in its operating systems and software. The iPhone maker was in conversation with Google for Gemini AI; however it did not continue the partnership with that company. Still, some reports said Apple could partner with Google to use an AI chatbot for some functions. Besides these companies, Apple turned down the partnering with Facebook-parent Meta over privacy concerns.
Several months ago, Apple made a strategic decision to reject a partnership with Meta Platforms Inc. to integrate its Llama AI chatbot into the iPhone. This decision was made during a period when Apple was already engaged in discussions with Google and OpenAI, indicating the company's clear focus on these potential partnerships. The report mentioned that the conversation did not reach its formal stage due to Meta's not being stringent enough in its privacy practices. Following this, Apple decided not to move ahead with the Facebook parent. The report mentioned that Apple had been criticising Meta's technology, and integration of Llama into the iPhone would still not have been possible.
On the other hand, Apple saw an opportunity to integrate ChatGPT into its iPhones and other devices. While Apple did not outright deny a partnership with Google, as it already collaborated with the company for its Safari web browser, the report hinted that Gemini might be integrated in the future based on this relationship. With the latest unveiling of Apple Intelligence, the iPhone maker has joined the AI race to provide features for its product users. However, the company still needs to improve its chatbot technology. Further, the report mentioned that Apple had also been in conversation with Anthropic AI and might also add that company as an additional option. The tech giant said Apple Intelligence would be available to iPhone, iPad and Mac later in 2024.
