Paris, April 23: Apple is expected to bring on-device AI to the iOS 18 update and add new capabilities to the iPhones. The new iOS 18 update is expected to run on the device without relying on a cloud server; instead, it may use the iPhone's hardware. To push on-device AI, Apple has reportedly acquired Datakalab, a startup company working on artificial intelligence.
As per the report published by Macrumors, Apple acquired Datakalab AI startup based in Paris to push the on-device AI tools. Apple's move to acquire the Paris-based company is reportedly part of the company's broader strategy to bring sophisticated AI technology to its iPhone and other products. Apple's quiet acquisition of Datakalab reportedly took place on December 17, 2023; however, this was noted by the European Commission. Apple has yet to announce the artificial intelligence or LLMs it would bring to the device. Still, Bloomberg's Mark Gurman reportedly said Apple's Large Language Model will run entirely on-device. Xavier and Lucas Fischer founded Datakalab in 2016, which later embarked on a significant journey to work on low-power and highly efficient deep-learning algorithms that did not have to rely on a cloud-based system. The report said Apple's approach has always promoted privacy and data security and offered the required performance. The report said local or on-device data processing minimises the risk of compromising users' data and offers fast processing times. Datakalab reportedly handled multiple "high-profile" projects, most notably working closely with the French government and Disney.
