Android 9 Pie Launched! Here are the Names of all Android Versions Released Till Now

While the new versions are being introduced, there is a tradition of naming the versions. As Android 9 Pie rolls out today, let us look back at the Android versions till date.

We are a smartphone generation and our lives somehow revolve around these devices. We may not even realise but every new update tries to simplify things for us. Now, Android phones are all set to get a new version as Google has launched a new operating system- Android 9 Pie. The OS will be first available on Google's smartphone Pixel, starting today and will be eventually rolled out for other phones. Android P- which stands for Pie comes with the integration of artificial intelligence to make your devices smarter. The Android 9 will predict your tasks based on your usage. The version is said to adapt to your life, giving you a customised appeal. Some of the features of Android Pie are an adaptive battery, a new navigation system, smart text selection, better security, among many others.

While the new versions are being introduced, there is a tradition of naming the versions. As Android 9 Pie rolls out today, let us look back at the Android versions till date:

Android version 1.5: Cupcake

The very first version of Android debuted in 2008. It was named cupcake which is a muffin like cake with creamy tops.

Android version 1.6: Donut

The next version was called donut, a dough confection and popular dessert. A search box was made available through this version.

Android versions 2.0 to 2.1: Eclair

The version was released in just six weeks from its previous version. Eclair is long biscuits covered with chocolate sauce.

Android version 2.2: Froyo

Android Froyo was launched in May 2010. Froyo is shortened for Frozen Yoghurt. It is an ice-like dessert made with milk and yogurt.

Android version 2.3: Gingerbread

Android's mascot came into identity with this Gingerbread version. Gingerbread, which are cake-like biscuits mostly eaten around Christmas time.

Android 3.0 to 3.2: Honeycomb

This version was made for Android tablets called the Honeycomb.

Android version 4.0: Ice Cream Sandwich

Released in the year 2011, it was called after Ice Cream Sandwich. It is a sweet made of delicious ice cream between two biscuits: an Ice Cream Sandwhich.

Android versions 4.1 to 4.3: Jelly Bean

The Jelly Bean version was one of the most impactful ones in the year 2012-2013. Jelly Beans are colourful sweets made of sugar and have a sweet jelly mixture inside.

Android version 4.4: KitKat

We all know Nestle's popular brand chocolate KitKat. The bar filled with waffles and covered with a chocolate coating shared its name with Android's next version.

Android versions 5.0 and 5.1: Lollipop

This version of android gave a new look to the operating system. Lollipops are different flavoured sugar candies which have a flavour mounted on top of a small stick.

Android version 6.0: Marshmallow

The next version was called Marshmallow, another sweet.

Android versions 7.0 and 7.1: Nougat

Released in 2016, it provided with a split mode and mode for organising notification. It added smaller and significant features.

Android version 8: Oreo

Launched in the year 2017, Oreo is a biscuit which has vanilla cream in the middle of two crispy chocolate cookies. It brought a lot of changes to the menu and also picture-in-picture mode.

Now we have the last version, called Pie. These names for the versions are based on a confectionary-theme and decided in alphabetical order.
