San Francisco, November 1: Google plans to release its new Android mobile OS next year with several features and overall design improvements. The upcoming Android 16 OS is anticipated to roll out in early 2025. Google launched its Android 15 OS, the 22nd version of its mobile operating system, on October 15, 2024. The upcoming smartphones, including the ones launching with Snapdragon 8 Elite, are already announced with this OS. Google launched its Android 14 version on October 4, 2023.
Considering the tech giant's launch timeline, the upcoming Android 16 should be launched in October 2025; however, according to the official Android Developer Google Blog announcement, it may be introduced sooner. Google would adopt a strategy to more frequently release the next big update to the smartphones; Matthew McCullough – Vice President of Product Management, Android Developer, said, "Android will have more frequent SDK releases with two releases planned in 2025 with new developer APIs. The post mentioned two releases in 2025 - the first would be launched in Q2 and the second in Q4. The company said these releases would help drive faster innovations in apps and services. The two major OS launches would include new developer APIs. Matthew McCullough said that the first release in the second quarter would include behavioural changes that would affect the apps. The second release in the fourth quarter would be "minor," but the feature updates, bug fixes, and optimisation will be picked up after the major release. Android said that besides these major and minor releases next year, the platform will roll out other updates in Q1 and Q3, which will provide "incremental updates" ensuring continuous quality. Google's platform said it would actively work with device partners and bring the Q2 update to most devices next year.
