Amazon 5 Days a Week Return to Office Mandate Not Part of ‘Backdoor Layoffs’ but To Strengthen Culture, Says CEO Andy Jassy During All-Hands Meeting
Andy Jassy said during all-hands meeting that the Amazon five days a week mandate was not intended for backdoor layoffs but to strengthen company's culture.
San Francisco, November 6: Amazon CEO Andy Jassy denied the mandate, which required the employees to come back to the office and work five days, was part of any "backdoor layoffs.". Jassy reportedly said that the layoffs were not intended by introducing the five-day-office work mandate set to be in effect from next year. After the e-commerce giant introduced its plans to call the employees from remote work to work in the office for five days. Several employees opposed this and began planning to leave the company.
Reuters mentioned in its report that Amazon CEO Andy Jassy explained during an all-hands meeting that the company did not plan to force attrition or satisfy the city leaders as per the employees' suggestions. The five-day office mandate was controversial and was not welcomed by all the employees. As per previous reports, many employees were estimated to leave the company. According to Amazon's plan, employees must come to the office five days a day starting next year. Previously, they were asked to work for three days. This announcement shocked some people in the workforce, who called it "stricter" compared to other tech companies in the industry. They said it would hinder the efficiency of the e-commerce giant due to the commuting times.
Those workers who did not comply with Amazon's five-day-office mandate were told to "voluntarily resign" and would be locked out of the company's computers. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy highlighted this action and said that various people theorised that the company's announcement of the work-from-office mandate was to initiate backdoor layoffs or that it had made some deal with cities or cities. Andy Jassy said neither of the cases was different regarding the work-from-office announcement. He said the employees were called back to the office to maintain and strengthen Amazon's culture. On the contrary, 500 employees signed a letter asking Amazon Cloud Computing CEO Matt Garman, who said that those unwilling could leave and join other companies, to revise the policy. They said that while working remotely, they operated well and that the new rule would affect employees, their families, and their medical challenges. Amazon CEO said, "we're going to be working through that adjustment together."
