Mike Tyson arrived in the wee hours of Friday, to inaugurate the Kumite 1 League, also known as K1 League. The American boxing legend received a heroic welcome at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport upon his arrival. There’s a lot of excitement around the Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) league, which is scheduled to begin on September 29.
For a boxing fan to have Mike Tyson in India, and that for inaugurating the MMA league, it is nothing less than a dream. As Tyson landed in India, amid tight security measures, it was Bollywood superstar Salman Khan’s bodyguard Shera who was seen accompanying out of the Mumbai Airport.

The name of the league was kept on a Japanese word – Kumite – which means ‘fight’. The K1 League will see contestants compete in seven different weight classes, i.e. Bantamweight (Max 60kg), Featherweight (Max 65 kg), Lightweight (Max 70 kg), Welterweight (Max 77 kg), Middleweight (Max 85 kg), Light Heavyweight (Max 95 kg), and Heavyweight (Over 95 kg).

On his maiden visit to India, the legendary boxer will be inaugurating the Kumite 1 League, starting Saturday. Kumite 1 League is a one-of-its-kind league in the discipline, in the context of India. The first match in the schedule of K1 League is between India and UAE. The fans who are willing to see Mike Tyson and the MMA competition in person, will have to visit Dome, NSCI (in Mumbai).
