Vinesh Phogat Gets India's 23rd Gold in CWG 2018, Wins Women's Freestyle 50 kg Wrestling Final
This is consecutive gold medal for Vinesh in Commonwealth Games after winning it four years ago in 48kg category in Glasgow.
Indian wrestler Vinesh Phogat has clinched the gold medal in women's freestyle 50kg event on Saturday after defeating Jessica Macdonald of Canada in Commonwealth Games 2018. The 23-year-old produced a stupendous performance in outshining her opponent in matter of few minutes by registering the victory based on technical superiority. This is India's 23rd gold medal at Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games while their overall medal tally moving up to 51 out of which 13 are silver and 15 bronze.
Vinesh recorded ten technical points (4,4,2) in comparison to Jessica's three points (2,1) in period 1. The Indian wrestler wrapped up the contest winning three more technical points to her Canadian competitor earning nil in period two. It was enough for Vinesh to become the first female wrestler in CWG 2018 to win the gold medal especially after Glasgow 2014 gold medallist and her cousin Babita Kumari Phogat settled for silver medal and Rio Olympics 2016 bronze medallist Sakshi Malik finished with bronze in the ongoing edition of Commonwealth Games. India has won a total of 10 medals in wrestling with celebrated wrestler Sushil Kumar winning third straight Commonwealth Games gold medal after he clinched top spot in Men's Freestyle 74 kg. Rahul Aware and Bajrang Punia also won gold medals in Men's Freestyle 57 kg and Men's Freestyle 65 kg respectively. Sumit Malik also bagged gold medal on day 11 after his opponent Sinivie Boltic pulled out of the Men's Freestyle 125 kg finals due to injury.
