The Colombian pair of Juan Sebastian Cabel and Robert Farah not only registered their first ever Grand Slam victory but also played a match which will go down in history as one of the best men’s doubles final matches at Wimbledon ever.
The pair from Colombia played a marathon match against French duo Nicolas Mahut and Edouard Roger-Vasselin in the memorable men’s doubles final. The score of the match read 6-7(5) 7-6(5) 7-6(6) 6-7(5) 6-3. However, that does not reveal how long or intensely fought the match was. All the opening four sets were decided by tie break.
The match lasted for four hours and 57 minutes and was the second longest in history of Men's Doubles. It missed the top slot by just four minutes. John McEnroe and Michael Stich won the longest Men's doubles match in 1992.
“I’m speechless. I kept watching the watch through the first and second set. I’m like: ‘We finished the second set and it’s been two hours and 15 minutes play. This is ridiculous. How long is this?’” said Farah after the match.
This was another marathon match at Wimbledon that Mahut was part of. He featured in the longest ever Grand Slam singles match against American John Isner in an 11-hour-five-minute match in 2010.
