Bianca Andreescu became Canada’s first Grand Slam champion and youngest slam winner in 13 years when she beat 23-time Grand Slam winner Serena Williams in straight sets at the US Open 2019 women’s singles final on Saturday. Canadian Andreescu, playing in her first-ever Grand Slam final, clinched the title having seen-off home favourite Serena 6-3, 7-5, in a rollercoaster final that swung like pendulums before Andreescu finally held it. Andreescu, 19, is also the youngest US Open winner since Svetlana Kuznetsova in 2004 and the first to win the title at Flushing Meadows in her debut. For Serena, who is chasing Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 Grand Slam titles, the defeat meant she has now lost four consecutive Grand Slam finals and endured successive final heartbreaks at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Bianca Andreescu Apologises To Crowd for Beating Serena Williams

Williams had won her first US Open title 1999 when Andreescu wasn’t even born – Bianca was born in 2000 – but at Flushing Meadows, nothing else mattered to the Canadian, who became Canada’s first-ever Grand Slam winner. The match wasn’t as one-sided as the scores would reveal. Serena lost the first set without a fight but 1/5 behind in the second set, she bounced back by winning four successive games but the night belonged to Andreescu, who clinched the set 7/5 and eventually the title.

The Queen in the North

Andreescu now has a 22/0 record in the win-loss ratio in matches she has completed this Tennis year, having last lost a game in February. In her previous game against Serena at the Canada Open, the 23-time Grand Slam champion retired hurt following an injury.
