The 23 Grand Slam champion Serena Williams suffered the worst defeat of her career as she lost to Johanna Konta in straight sets at the WTA San Jose Tournament. It just took Konta 51 minutes to crush the American opponent by 6-1, 6-0. The 36-year-old committed 25 unforced errors and just managed to put 41 per cent of first serves into her play.
Kanto managed to the American’s serve six times and clearly dominated the game. In the span of exactly 51 minutes, Konta fired six aces and smacked 17 winning shots to Williams. "I think she played well in the second set and I think I wasn't sharp at all in the first set and she got confident and she clearly ran away with it," said Williams after the loss.
“She obviously wasn't playing at her best level, nowhere near it, and I really just tried to play the match on my terms," said Konta, who won the tournament two years ago. "I tried to put aside the incredible champion she is and just play the player of the day," she said. "I felt I did better than her on the day but it's still a humbling experience to be out here with her."
Both Serena and Johanna played their first match after Wimbledon 2018. Konta won her first WTA title in 2016 at the Stanford University by defeating her older sister Venus Williams in the finals. Prior to this, Serena lost the finals of the Wimbledon to Angelique Kerber by 6-3, 6-3. Konta will next face Sofia Kenin on Monday.
