The third seed Federer lost to the 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16 and will have to wait for his record seventh Australian Open title. Defending champion Roger Federer faced a formidable opponent in Stefanos Tsitsipas. The Greek Tsitsipas came out all guns blazing and forced the second and fourth set into a tiebreak, winning both the sets. The ageless 20-time Grand Slam champion, who was gunning for a record seventh Melbourne Park title and third in a row, saw his hopes getting dashed by Stefanos Tsitsipas. The 37-year-old Federer was undone by his forehands and unforced errors towards the end at the crucial moments in the fourth set and the final tiebreaker. Everybody is hailing the 20-year-old Stefanos Tsitsipas for his victory and is hailing the Greek as the new guy to look out for.

This is the second consecutive Grand Slam that Federer has been defeated in the Round of 16 now. He had lost in the US Open 2018 Round of 16 at the hands of Australian J Millman. However, the talk in tennis circles is about the arrival of next generation (#GenNext) of tennis stars with Alexander Zverev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Frances Tiafoe and others coming into their own.
