All eyes were glued to the 22-year-old youngster as he made a debut at the US Open 2019 to face the 20-time Grand Slam winner Roger Federer. After getting a firm backing from the Indian cricket captain Virat Kohli, the Indian tennis ace was rearing to go. The Arthur Ashe Stadium in New York was brought to a standstill after the youngster dominated the first set like a boss by 6-4. With three double faults during the first set, Roger Federer was on the losing side. But it was wasn’t easy for the youngster to tame the Swiss tennis ace as he made a strong comeback in the second set by holding on to his lead after he got into the groove. World number 190 was making sure to not give up so easily and was putting up a fight. Sumit Nagal made sure that he would make Federer earn each point. Federer who is known for classy forehand shots slammed a few and maintained his dominance in the third set too.
The fourth set too was a rollercoaster with Sumit refusing to let go off so easily. But Federer broke into the set quite early and did not give his opponent enough breathing space. This is the 19th time that Roger Federer has advanced to the second round of the US Open. Talking about Sumit Nagal, while the rest of his contemporaries Somdev Devvarman, Yuki Bhambri, Saketh Myneni and Prajnesh Gunneswaran were the only ones to have made it to the majors, the 22-year-old is the fifth name to have made it so far.
