Since beating world no. 1 Simona Halep in the opening round of US Open 2017, it was Maria’s biggest win over a top-five player since returning from the dope ban two years ago. Maria has been struggling with injuries and consistency, but not on Friday as she took on the big challenge, facing defending champion and third-seed Caroline Wozniacki. And after a gruelling two and half hour’s battle, Sharapova showed Wozniacki the door.

Maria who was meeting Caroline for their 11th encounter boasted of a slight advantage in the head to head record, 6-4 in her favour. But it proved to be of little importance as the third seed raced ahead to 4-1 in the first set. But the Russian who is known for her steely nerves and never-say-die attitude made a dramatic comeback to win the opening set 6-4. She was that good. However, just when it looked like Sharapova could seal the victory in straight sets, the Florida resident squandered chances to provide Caroline with a lifeline. The Australian Open 2018 winner levelled the match by taking the second set 6-4.
