Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic in the final to become the first man from Britain to win Wimbledon in 77 years. Only Fred Perry from Britain had won the Wimbledon before Murray and that was in 1936.
Wimbledon 2019 begins from July 1 and it's that time of the year when tennis greats don pristine white short and shirt to compete in the most reputed and oldest grand slam in the sport. And in the run-up to this year's Wimbledon, we visit some of the most memorable moments from recent times at SW19. In this part, we go back to 2013, the historic year when Andy Murray beat Novak Djokovic in the final to become the first man from Britain to win Wimbledon in 77 years. Only Fred Perry from Britain (Men's Singles) had won the Wimbledon before Murray and that was in 1936.
It was also the day when Murray proved himself as a worthy contender in the 'Big Four' and finally came out of the shadows of his great contemporaries- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. Federer, having won the 2012 Wimbledon title, was the defending champion. However, the Swiss great lost to world no 116 Sergiy Stakhovsky in the second round in a huge upset.
Rafael Nadal was also sent packing in the first round itself, after world no 135 Steve Darcis caused a huge upset, by defeating the Spaniard. It was clear from then on that Andy Murray had a great chance to lift the Wimbledon trophy. The only obstacle in his way was a certain Serbian named Novak Djokovic, whom he more than dominated in an interesting final.

The whole of Great Britain celebrated as Murray lifted the coveted Wimbledon trophy that fateful day or night (depending upon which part of the hemisphere you live). It was Murray's second Grand Slam title and first of his two Wimbledon trophies. Murray beat Novak Djokovic in the final in straight sets (6-4 7-5 6-4) to end a nation's wait for Wimbledon trophy.
