India’s most prolific wrestler Sushil Kumar wins the gold medal in men’s freestyle 74kg wrestling event at Commonwealth Games 2018. This is second gold for Indian boxers in Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games after Rahul Aware won in men’s freestyle 57kg category on April 12. Two-time Olympic medallist Sushil Kumar gave an inspiring performance to lift the spirit of Indian contingent participating in Gold Coast Games. The defending champion defeated Johannes Botha of South Africa to take India’s medal tally in CWG 2018 to 29 including 14 gold, 6 silver and 9 bronze.

All eyes were on Sushil Kumar as he took on Botha at Carrara Sports Arena 1 and his performance exceed everyone’s expectations. The 34-year-old won the match by Victory by Technical Superiority that means without any points scored by the opponent. Yes, such was the dominance of Sushil Kumar who won a total of 10 technical points (4,2,2,2) to floor Botha without breaking into a sweat in 80 seconds.

He reached the final round by beating Muhammad Asad BUTT of Pakistan, Jevon Balfour of Canada and Connor Evans of Australia in previous matches. This is Sushil Kumar’s straight gold medal in Commonwealth Games after he recorded victory in Moscow 2010 in men’s 66 kg Freestyle and 2014 Glasgow in men’s 74 kg Freestyle.

Earlier, Rahul Aware won the gold medal in Men's Freestyle 57 kg event beating Steven Takahashi of Canada while Babita had to settle for a silver medal after losing to Canadian Diana Weicker in Women's Freestyle 53 kg Nordic wrestling. Another medal came from Kiran who defeated Katouskia Pariadhaven of Mauritius in the Women's Freestyle 76 kg Bronze Medal.
