The 2018 Summer Youth Olympic Games, officially known as the III Summer Youth Olympic Games is scheduled to take place from October 6 to October 18 in Buenos Aires. For the first time, the Summer Youth Olympic Games is going to take place outside of Asia. Almost 4000 athletes between 15 to 18 age from 206 countries are participating in the Youth Olympics. Around 241 events in 32 sports are going to take place. This year kiteboarding and BMX freestyle park will make their debuts, as well as a new version of handball that’s played on the beach. Football (aka soccer) is out, in favour of futsal, an indoor game played on a smaller hard court.
Some of these sporting events you can see the cute bird from the Google doodle doing it. We see it swimming, cycling, weightlifting, fencing, doing artistic gymnastics and taekwondo. Talking a bit more about the fun doodle, Google has come up with, and it is designed by Cynthia Yuan Cheng and Vrinda Zaveri. This doodle’s reach is in most parts of Asia, Russia, India; European nations such as Spain, France, Slovakia and more. Among other continents, it will be seen in Australia and South America.
Youth Olympic Games is much more than excelling in sports events. The tournament is designed to expose young athletes to different cultures and instil the Olympic values, which is friendship, respect and excellence as well as determination, inspiration, courage and equality. The motto of the 2018 Summer Youth Olympics is ‘Feel the future’ meanwhile its mascot is a teen jaguar named Pandi. According to Gerardo Werthein, the president of the Buenos Aires 2018 Organising Committee, the mascot "seeks to inspire young people on the transformative power of Olympism and sport".
