The UEFA Champions League also got underway this week followed by the action-packed fixtures in some of the top leagues of Europe. Let us look at the newsmakers from the world of cricket, tennis, football, golf and more in our weekly sporting review.

UEFA Champions League 2018-19

In matchday 1 of the Champions League, there were no shocks as pretty much all of the top teams managed all three points barring Manchester City who lost to Lyon 1-2 at home at Etihad Stadium. Liverpool beat PSG 3-2 with a late Roberto Firmino goal. Paul Pogba’s brace helped Manchester United overcome 0-3 while Real Madrid swept aside AS Roma 3-0. In Cristiano Ronaldo’s first European game for Juventus, he saw a soft red card as his side took vital three points away at Valencia. The most interesting game of matchday 1 was played at San Siro, where Inter Milan scored two injury-time goal to beat Tottenham Hotspurs 2-1 in a game they were largely second best for most parts. Juventus vs Valencia: Cristiano Ronaldo Gets Red Card Leaving Him in Pool of Tears During the UEFA Champions League 2018, Netizens Slam the Decision (Watch Video).

UEFA Europa League 2018-19

Some of the top English teams like Arsenal and Chelsea were in action in the Europa League and managed to win their ties. Arsenal were at home to Vorskla, and a brace from Aubameyang along with a Mesut Ozil and Danny Welbeck goal was enough for Unai Emery’s men to secure a win. Chelsea were away at PAOK and won Brazilian Willian’s strike gave them a 0-1 win. New signing Gonzalo Higuain scored for AC Milan in their 0-1 away win over Dudelange.

English Premier League 2018-19

Liverpool scored three first-half goals to register their seventh straight victory. Mo Salah and Joel Matip were on target for Liverpool who also benefited from a Wesley Hoedt own goal. Manchester United hit the stumbling block once again as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Old Trafford. Fred’s first goal for the Red Devils was cancelled by a Joao Moutinho beauty in the second half to pile on the misery on the struggling Manchester United. Their city rivals Manchester City thumped Cardiff City 0-5 courtesy a Riyad Mahrez brace. Chelsea and Arsenal who were in action on Sunday were subject to contrasting emotions. While the Blues were frustrated at West Ham United in a goalless draw, the Gunners managed a 2-0 win at home to Everton. English Premier League 2018–19 Points Table & Standings: Chelsea Third, Arsenal Sixth While Liverpool Remain on Top of EPL Table the Current Football Season!

Spanish La Liga 2018-19

Real Madrid managed to be on level points with Barcelona with a home win against Espanyol while Barcelona dropped points for the first time this season against Girona. Marco Asensio goal was enough to separate Madrid and Espanyol at the Santiago Bernabeu. The real talking point in the league was Barcelona’s inability to beat Girona at home. Cristian Stuani scored a brace after Messi had given the Catalonians the lead. Barcelona needed a Gerrard Pique goal to salvage a point for them. Atletico Madrid also gained some lost grounds with a 0-2 win against Getafe. La Liga 2018–19 Points Table & Standings: Spanish League Football Match Results, Schedule, Fixtures of the Current Season.

Italian Serie A 2018-19

Juventus needed Cristiano Ronaldo’s brilliance to beat Frosinone 0-2 away to maintain the three points leads at the top. This was the Portuguese skipper’s second straight game in which he has scored and looks like he has started to find his feet in Italy. A Lorenzo Insigne brace helped Napoli propel over Torino 1-3. AC Milan’s poor run of form continued as they failed to get three points at home against Atlanta as the match ended 2-2.

Asia Cup 2018

The super four stages of the Asia Cup 2018 got underway this week and produced some really close games especially featuring Afghanistan. The Pakistan and Afghanistan went to the last over with veteran Shoaib Malik using all his experience to guide his country home. Afghanistan had put up a decent score of 257 on board batting first with Hashmatullah Shahidi scoring a brilliant 97. Pakistan in reply were cruising at one stage with Imam-Ul-Haq and Babar Azam scoring fifties. But wickets fell, in the end, to make the tie interesting. Needing 10 runs of the last over, Malik hit a six and four in consecutive balls to help his side to a three-wicket win. Asia Cup 2018: Shoaib Malik Consoles Rashid Khan After Pakistan Manages to Beat Afghanistan in Last-Over Thriller.

India played against Pakistan and Bangladesh in the Super Four stage of Asia Cup 2018 and completely dominated both these games with both bat and bowl. Against the Bangla Tigers, the Indian bowling restricted them to paltry 173 which they chased with ease. The game against Pakistan too followed a similar pattern. With some tight bowling and fielding, Pakistan huffed and puffed its way to 237. Rohit Sharma and Shikhar Dhawan scored centuries each as India romped home with a nine wickets win. India vs Pakistan Video Highlights Asia Cup 2018 Super Four Round: Rohit Sharma, Shikhar Dhawan Help IND Thump PAK.

Afghanistan’s loss to Bangladesh in the Super Four can be attributed to their lack of experience more than anything. A game they should have won easily chasing 249 turned to a three runs loss for them as Bangladesh strike bowler Mustafizur Rehman used all his tricks to restrict the Afghans.
