India finished with impressive 368 medals at the Special Olympics World Summer Games 2019 at Abu Dhabi in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). The Special Olympics 2019 was held from March 14 to March 21. India’s medal tally including 85 gold, 145 silver, and 129 bronze medals. The Indian contingent that took part in the Special Olympics 2019 comprised of 284 athletes.
The maximum number of medals for India came in powerlifting with athletes clinching a total of 96 medals (20 gold, 33 silver, and 43 bronze). The Indian athletes performed across sports like- athletics, golf, volleyball, aquatics, cycling, judo, powerlifting, table tennis, roller skating, badminton, basketball traditional, handball traditional and football 7-side female and secured medals in all these sports. After powerlifting, India’s second best performance was in Roller Skating with 49 medals (13 gold, 20 silver, and 16 bronze). In cycling, India bagged 45 medals (11 gold, 14 silver, and 20 bronze). From track and field events, India earned 39 medals (5 gold, 24 silver, and 10 bronze).

India had previously appeared at the Special Olympics eight times. The Special Olympics Games takes place every two years. The official website of Special Olympics states that its mission is to provide year-round sports training and athletic competition in a variety of Olympic-type sports for children and adults with intellectual disabilities, giving them continuing opportunities to develop physical fitness, demonstrate courage, experience joy and participate in a sharing of gifts, skills and friendship with their families, other Special Olympics athletes and the community.
