Shreyasi Singh of India wins the first gold medal on day seven of Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games on Wednesday. The 27-year-old from New Delhi outranked Emma Cox of Australia and Linda Pearson of Scotland to take India’s medal tally in Commonwealth Games 2018 to 23. This is also the tenth medal in shooting for India after Om Mitharval bagged bronze medal in men’s 50m pistol event earlier in the day. Shreyasi Singh’s fellow countrywoman Varsha Varman finished at the fourth place and narrowly missed winning the bronze medal for herself and the country. Nevertheless, Shreyasi’s golden moment cements India’s standings at GC 2018 medal table fixed at the third place.

Shreyasi Singh finished the event with a top shot of 96+2 followed by Cox’s 96+1 and Pearson’s 87. Varsha’s score read 86, a difference of one point that lead to her missing out on the podium finish. This is first gold medal for the Indian shooter at Commonwealth Games after winning a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland. Shreyasi had also won a bronze medal in Double trap team at Incheon 2014 Asian Games.

Earlier on day 7, Om Prakash Mitharval claimed the bronze medal in the men’s 50m pistol event. Mitharwal, who also picked up the bronze in the men’s 10m air pistol final, registered a score of 201.1 to finish at the third spot of the men’s 50m pistol event. It was Mitharwal’s second medal in the ongoing prestigious quadrennial event, after seasoned campaigner Heena Sidhu picked gold and silver in women’s 25m air pistol and women’s 10m air pistol respectively.

Defending champion Jitu Rai, the other Indian in the fray, failed to add to his gold that he had won in men’s 10m air pistol event as he posted a decidedly below score of 105, to finish at the bottom of the eight-man final. Daniel Repacholi of Australia won the gold medal with a new Commonwealth Games record of 227.2, the silver medal went to Bangladesh’s Shakil Ahmed after firing a total of 220.5.
