Sachin Chaudhary Wins India's First Medal in Para-Sports at CWG 2018, Bags Bronze in Men's Heavyweight Final

Para-powerlifter Sachin Chaudhary helped India win the first medal in Para-sports at the Commonwealth Games 2018. The para-powerlifter bagged a bronze medal in the men's heavyweight final at the Carrara Sports Arena 1. Chaudhary finished with a combined effort of 181 kg in a 10-man final to bring home the bronze medal. The Indian para-powerlifter finished behind Nigeria's Abdulazeez Ibrahim (191.9 kg) and Malaysia's Yee Khie Jong (188.7 kg) who won the gold and silver medal respectively. In 2017, the 35-year-old had won a silver at the Powerlifting World Cup in Dubai with a career-best lift of 200 last year. He had finished ninth in the men's -82.50kg event at the 2012 Summer Paralympics.

Besides Chaudhary, Farman Bash and Ashok Kumar on Tuesday finished fifth and 11th respectively in the men's lightweight final, while Saina Khatun came fifth in the women's lightweight final.

Meanwhile, president Ram Nath Kovind congratulated the para-powerlifter on Twitter. "Congratulations Sachin Chaudhary for winning Bronze medal in Men's Heavyweight Para-powerlifting event at #GC2018," the President tweeted.

The highlight of the day six at CWG 2018 as far as India is concerned was shooter Heena Sidhu’s gold medal in the Women's 25m Pistol finals. Meanwhile, Mohammed Anas Yahiya competing in Men's 400m final missed the bronze medal as he finished fourth.

Following these two medals, India thus far has collected 21 medals at the CWG 2018. Sidhu’s effort helped India bag 11 gold medal while Chaudhary helped the country win sixth bronze. (Inputs PTI)
