The world of athletics lost a gem on Wednesday with the death of Kenyan track and field star Nicholas Bett at the age of 28. The former world 400m hurdles champion died in a car accident in Nandi County on August 8, 2018. Bett who finished on top in 400m hurdles at 2015 World Championships was killed in the country’s high-altitude training region. The world champion hurdler had returned to Kenya just a day after participating in the African Championships held in Nigeria. The tragic death of Nicholas Bett in an unfortunate car crash has sent shockwaves in the sporting world with fans grieving the big loss. Condolences are pouring on the social media for Nicholas’ bereaved family and friends.

Athletics Kenya issued a statement on Bett’s death, which read: “We regrets to learn of the sudden demise of one of our top athletes, the 2015 400m Hurdles World Champion #NicholasKiplagatBett who represented Kenya in the just concluded Africa Championships. Our condolences to his family and the entire athletics fraternity.”

According to a report in Independent, Bett’s trainer, Vincent Mumo, said that the Kenyan hurdler’s SUV hit bumps in the road and rolled as it went off the tarmac. Born on January 27, 1990, Nicholas rose to fame after becoming the first Kenyan to bring gold after competing in the 400m race at the fifteenth edition of the IAAF World Championships, the 2015 Beijing World Championships.
