At the recently concluded Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Buenos Aires in Argentina Indian athletes dished out their best performance and collected 13 medals. At the inaugural Youth Olympic Games, India had achieved just eight medals. Meanwhile, this year India bagged their first gold medal and eventually collected three. Having arrived from the Buenos Aires, Prime Minister Narendra Modi today interacted and felicitated with the medal winners of Youth Olympic Games 2018. Union Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore was also present during the function.
India’s campaign ended with three gold, nine silver, and a bronze medal. Weightlifter Jeremy Lalrinnunga (62kg) was the first to win the gold medal. Apart from him, Manu Bhaker and Saurabh Chaudhary won the gold medals as well. Bhaker interestingly became the first shooter from India to claim a gold medal at the Youth Olympic Games.
Sports Minister Rajyavardhan Rathore, who was present besides PM Modi, took to Twitter and wrote that India’s future looks bright. “Young Champions created History! Our young champions have made the entire nation proud by winning 3 GOLD, 9 SILVER & 1 BRONZE medals, India's BEST EVER Tally in #YouthOlympics at #YouthOlympicGames2018. India's future looks bright in the hands of these Young Champions #KheloIndia,” he tweeted.
The Indian contingent at the Youth Olympic Games consisted of 46 athletes and they participated across 13 sports. Out of these, the Indian athletes won medals in eight sports events.
