Naman Tanwar Settles for Bronze Medal After Losing Men's 91kg Semifinals Boxing Bout at CWG 2018

Indian boxer Naman Tanwar wins first boxing medal for the country in Commonwealth Games 2018. He settled for bronze medal after losing his men’s 91kg semi-finals bout at Gold Coast Games Commonwealth Games on Friday. The 19-year-old young pugilist was defeated by Jason Whateley of Australia in Men's 91kg Semifinal 1 match at Oxenford Studios. With this India’s medal tally at CWG 2018 moves to 35 medal including 16 gold, 8 silver and 11 bronze so far. India continue to maintain their third-place rankings in GC 2018 medal table and team standings.
Tanwar had assured India of a bronze medal after making to semi-finals of men’s 91kg event. He had defeated Haruna Mhando of Tanzania and Frank Masoe of Samoa in previous rounds before he faced a tough and experienced opponent in form of Australian Jason Whateley in the semis. Naman Tanwar remained out of favour from the panel of five judges and also received one warning in the third round with decision going in the Aussie boxer’s favour 4:0.
A lot is expected from the 12-member boxing team with the likes of MC Mary Kom, Vikas Krishan, Manoj Thakur and Amit in race to bag medals in Commonwealth Games 2018. The Olympic bronze-medallist Mary Kom will square off against Northern Ireland's Kristina O'Hara in the final on April 14. Kom had defeated a defensive Anusha Dilrukshi Koddithuwakku of Sri Lanka 5-0 to make the summit clash in her debut appearance at the Games.
