Mirabai Chanu & P Gururaja Win Medals for India at CWG 2018 on Day 1: Twitterati Hail Weightlifters for Gold Coast Games Success
Apart from the glorious run in weightlifting, Indian players in other sporting discipline have also got off to a positive start at Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games.
Indian weightlifters Mirabai Chanu and P Gururaja handed country the first medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games held at Gold Coast, Australia. While Gururaja opened the account for India by bagging the silver medal in the men's 56-kg category, it was Chanu who gave India the first golden moment of GC 2018. The 23-year-old champion from Manipur won gold with her new world record performance. She lifted a total of 196kg (86 kg in snatch and 110 in clean and jerk) in the women’s 48-kg category discipline. Thanks to Mirabai Chanu and Gururaja Poojary impressive show, India is place on top of the Commonwealth Games 2018 medal table. India’s medal tally on Day 1 of Gold Coast Games stand at 1 gold, 1 silver, 0 bronze (total = 2) and it is making the local fans super happy. The first medal win for India came from P Gururaja when the 26-year-old lifted a total of 249 kg (111 kg in snatch and 138 kg in clean and jerk) in the men’s 566-kg category discipline. Though he missed out on winning the gold that went to Malaysia's Muhammad Azroy Hazalwa Izhar Ahmad, Gururaja inaugurated India’s medal tally at CWG 2018 with his personal best show. Gururaja a resident of Kundapura in coastal Karnataka is the son of a pick-up-truck driver and this win at Gold Coast has fulfilled the dreams of a lot of people including his family and coach.
Coming to the second medal win, also the golden moment, it was Saikhom Mirabai Chanu who made the country proud with her record-smashing power-packed show. Chanu who had set a world record of lifting 194 kg in total (85 kg in snatch and 109 kg in clean and jerk) in the 2017 World Weightlifting Championships went ahead to make a new world record in Gold Coast 2018. The 23-year-old lifted a total of 196 kg (86 kg in snatch and 110 kg in clean and jerk) to overshadow her competitors and clinch gold for India!

Apart from the glorious run in weightlifting, Indian players in other sports have also got off to a positive start. In women's team table tennis group match, India defeated Sri Lanka 3-0. The badminton team alson thrashed opponents from same country in in Group A of the mixed team championship with star names Saina Nehwal and Kidambi Srikkanth winning their respective singles matches. The only downer in the day's action was Indian women's hockey team's shocking 2-3 defeat against Wales in the group A clash.
