Mirabai Chanu who made India proud at the Commonwealth Games 2018 at Gold Coast, Australia will not be a part of the Asian Games 2018 scheduled to take place in  Jakarta owing to an unidentified back issue. The back has been bothering her since May. Mirabai is yet, to begin with, full-fledged weight training. According to Indian coach Vijay Sharma, Mirabai must stay away from the Asian Games to be fit for the Olympics qualifiers which will happen later this year.

“I have submitted a report to the federation. Now they have to take a decision. I am of the opinion that in such less time it’s not good to take a heavy load. The Olympic qualifiers event is approaching and that is more important than the Asian Games,” Sharma told PTI.

Mirabai travelled to Mumbai to resume her training and mobility exercise after her pain subsidized. But according to Vijay she was in pain again and does not wish to aggravate her pain. “She is in constant touch with the federation. She was okay but felt slight pain yesterday in training. She stopped training but has resumed it again today,” he added. Even the doctors are unable to diagnose the problem with her back. “It is a rare problem, the doctors say there might be small tear in the ligament. That is why the MRI’s and CT scans are coming clean,” Sharma said. However, the final decision of her participation will be made Thursday said the IWF Secretary Sahdev Yadav. Chanu not participating in the tournament could prove to be a big blow for India.
