Former Indian cricketer and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) candidate Gautam Gambhir is leading from East Delhi constituency by a huge margin of votes. The Cricketer-turned-politician, who is making his political debut at the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, has received 105863 number of votes. His nearest rival Arvinder Singh Lovely of the Congress is over 50,000 votes behind at the time of writing this story.
The biggest disappointment from this constituency, however, has been Atishi from the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP). The 37-year-old, who is credited with revolutionising education in Delhi, was expected to give Gambhir a tough fight. Many even tipped her to clinch the constituency seat owing to her superior political skills against the newly joined cricketer. But Atishi has so far received only 37231 number of votes, accounting for just 18.44% of the total number votes counted.
Gambhir retired from all forms of cricket in December 2018 bringing an end to a 15-year-long illustrious career. He represented India in 242 international matches and scored over 10,000 international runs with 20 centuries including two World Cup titles.
Just a few months after calling it a day, the former Indian opener joined BJP and was given a party ticket to contest from the East Delhi constituency.
The 2011 World Cup winner was also involved in a controversial fiasco with AAP after being accused of circulating derogatory pamphlets against his opponent Atishi. Gambhir, however, denied those allegations and also filed a defamation suit against both Atishi and Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal.
