Laureus World Sports Awards 2024 Winners List: Novak Djokovic, Aitana Bonmati, Jude Bellingham and Others Who Won Honours at Annual Ceremony
The best performers of the 2023 sports season were rewarded with glorious awards at the Laureus World Sports Awards 2024 ceremony. Novak Djokovic and Aitana Bonmati were named best in their respective categories, while Spain’s Women’s team won the Team of the Year award. Bellingham was also rewarded for his great first season at Real Madrid.
The Laureus World Sports Awards 2024 ceremony took place in Madrid on 22nd April. Fans witnessed eight different winners of respective categories with many present and past megastars attending the ceremony. The winners of the Laureus World Sports Awards are selected by the ultimate sports jury - the 69 members of the Laureus World Sports Academy, the living legends of sport honouring the greatest athletes of today. Laureus Sportsman of the Year 2024 Winner: Novak Djokovic
The Tennis star beats many other sporting icons like Lionel Messi, Max Verstappen and Erling Haaland to claim the award. Djokovic won three Grand Slams in 2023 and also set a record for the most Grand Slams in the Men’s Singles category. This is Djokovic’s fifth award at the ceremony.
Laureus Sportswoman of the Year 2024 Winner: Aitana Bonmati
26-year-old Spanish footballer won her first award for her mega season. She won every major trophy in the 2023 season. League title, Champions League and World Cup Triumph won her multiple individual awards in football. Winning Ballon d’Or and Laureus Sportswoman of the Year capped off a productive season for her. He overtook Iga Swiatek, and athletes Shakrika Jackson and Mikaela Shiffrin.
Laureus Breakthrough of the Year 2024 Winner: Jude Bellingham
Jude Bellingham came to limelight as he moved to Real Madrid in the summer transfer window. He did well in the German league but his clutch performances in the Spanish capital caught many eyes. He broke multiple records in the very first season with Real Madrid and was awarded with the Laureus Breakthrough of the Year 2024 award. Jude Bellingham beat Coco Gauff, Josh Kerr, and swimming sensation Qin Haiyang. Laureus Sports for Good 2024 Winner: Rafa Nadal Foundation
Rafael Nadal may be away from the action, but he is contributing to the sport he loves. Nadal’s Foundation won the Laureus Sports for Good 2024 award for their efforts in the development of budding sports stars. Many other organizations were nominated for the award.
Laureus Team of the Year 2024 Winner: Spain Women’s National Football Team
In the ‘team’ award category, Spain’s football team won the award. The side won its first World Cup last year with a dominating performance. For the glamorous award, the side overcame the challenge of the Manchester City Men’s team, the World Cup Winner German Basketball team and also Red Bull Racing for their Formula One title.
Laureus Comeback of the Year 2024 Winner: Simone Biles
US athlete Simone Biles made a strong comeback after missing multiple events at Tokyo Olympics. The star won four gold and one silver award at the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships. She beat players like Jamal Murray (basketball) and Siya Kolisi for the award.
Laureus Action Sportsperson of the Year 2024 Winner: Alisa Trew
Australian skateboarder Alisa Trew is currently ranked 14th in the World. Arisa became the first female athlete to successfully execute a 720 trick, which involves completing two full rotations mid-air. For the Laureus Award, the action sports star beat Caroline Marks and Filipe Toledo. Laureus Action Sportsperson with Disability of Year 2024 Winner: Diede de Groot
The Netherlands’ tennis star Diede de Groot won the award defeating Luka Ekler and Markus Rehm. With her victory at the 2024 Australian Open, the Dutch wheelchair star won her 13th consecutive Grand Slam singles title. Incredibly, she has achieved the calendar-year Grand Slam – claiming all four majors in a season – three years in a row.
