The second edition of Khelo India Youth Games (KIYG), formerly known as Khelo India School Games, is set to begin in Pune from January 9. The KIYG 2019 edition will see over 10,000 athletes participate in the multi-sport event in India. The two-week sports’ tournament will feature sportspersons participating in 18 different disciplines this year.

Last year, the games took place in Delhi, and it was Haryana who stood at the top position with 102 medals – 38 Gold, 26 Silver, and 38 Bronze – in their kitty. Maharashtra was on the second position after winning 36 Gold, 32 Silver, and 43 Bronze medals in the competition. In the inaugural edition, nearly 4,000 athletes had participated in the 16 sports’ disciplines. This year, “Around 14,000 persons, including 9,000 sportspersons and 4,000 managers, will be coming for the Games,” said Maharashtra Sports Minister Vinod Tawde.

While inaugurating the KIYG event last year, PM Narendra Modi had said, “Khelo India is not only about winning medals, it is an effort to give strength to a mass movement for playing more. We want to focus on every aspect that would make sports more popular across the nation.”

Khelo India Youth Games in an annual sports event in India which is organised under the supervision of the government of India. Every year, the Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs offers scholarships to a certain number of students for their development and training to support them at an early age in their career.
