Jakarta, September 1: The Indian Army today congratulated Naib Subedar Amit Panghal on winning the gold medal in 49 Kg weight category boxing event. The army in its tweet lauded Panghal for his outstanding victory beating Rio Olympics gold medalist to clinch the medal. Earlier in the day, Naib Subedar Panghal scripted history at Asian Games 2018. He outclassed Uzbekistan’s Hasanboy Dusmatov by a split decision of 3-2.

Panghal started well in the first round and capitalised on his start in the next two rounds. Hasanboy seemed a bit nervous in his corner.  In the semi-final, on Friday Naib Subedar Panghal faced a tough challenge from Philippines' Carlo Paalam. He knocked out Paalam in a split decision of 3-2 to enter the finals. The Haryana pugilist was expected to face an extremely difficult task in the final but he showed his class to clinch the gold medal.

Naib Subedar Panghal is not the only army man to win gold in the Asian Games 2018. Naib Subedar Neeraj Chopra had also won a gold medal in javelin throw setting a world record. Chopra's best throw of 88.06 came in the third attempt. It was a national record for the 20-year-old champion. Armymen also bagged a gold medal in men`s quadruple sculls (MX4) event of rowing. Subedar Sawarn Singh, Havaldar Bhokanal Dattu Baban, Havaldar Om Prakash, and Sapper Sukhmeet Singh B won the gold medal after beating the host team and the team from Thailand in 6:17.13 minutes.

Naib Subedar Jinson Johnson won a gold medal in men’s 1500 metres. He took a time of 3:44.72 to finish the race. He was trained at IndianArmy  Sports Institute. Apart from these four golds army personnel also won three bronze and three silver medals. Naib Subedar Johnson also won silver in the men's 800m final at Asian Games 2018. Men’s 4 X 400 relay team who won silver medal also consists of two army men Subedar Arokia Rajiv and Subedar Kunhu Muhammed Puthanpurakkal won silver, whereas Mohammed Anas from the Indian Navy was also part of the team. Anas also won a silver in men’s 400 metres.
