Indian Chess star Humpy Koneru won the 2019 World Rapid Chess Championship on Saturday which was held in Moscow. The 32-year-old defeated China’s Lei Tingje in an Armageddon game to win her maiden world title. Koneru had initially lost the opening round against Tingje but made a great comeback to win the second round and was two good for the Chinese player in the decider as she emerged victorious in the end. Humpy had taken a hiatus from chess from 2016 to 2018 because she became a mother but within a year of her return, she has won her first world title. This win came as a surprise to the Indian chess player as she did not expect to come in the first place. 'When I started my first game in the morning, I didn't expect to finish first. I thought if I could finish in the top three that would be a great result.' Humpy said after her win. 'I managed to win my rapid games in the last two rounds and got a chance to win the title. It was a comfortable win in the end.' The 32-year-old added.

In the men’s event, defending world champion Magnus Carlsen won his third rapid title. The Norwegian remained undefeated in the tournament with eight wins, seven draws and no losses, on his way to his third title. Iran’s Alireza Firouzja won the silver medal while Japan’s Hikaru Nakamura claimed bronze.
