Hima Das To Be First Sports Ambassador of Assam; Gold Medalist at IAAF U20 Championship To Be Given State-Level Felicitation
Hima Das became a household name in India as she scripted history at IAAF World U20 Championships, by winning a Gold medal at the international sports meet.
Awards and accolades keep coming for Hima Das, as now she will be appointed as the Sports Ambassador of Assam. Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal announced that she would be the first sports ambassador of the state. Not only that but also a cash reward of 50 lakhs was also announced for the teenage-wonder!
CM Sarbananda Sonowal also met the girl’s parents (Ranjit and Junali Das) at her home, on Tuesday. Sonowal said that Hima had raised the stature of the people of the state (of Assam) globally. He heaped lavish praises on her stunning success she achieved at the international sports meet.
The Assam chief minister also greeted her parents with the traditional Gamosa (Assamese scarf of honour), a Sarai (brass metal offering tray with a stand), and a citation. The State government would be felicitating her at a state-level program when she returns to Assam.

The 18-year-old girl became the first Indian woman to win a Gold medal as she won the 400m final race at the U20 Championship held in Finland. Hima Das completed the run in 51.46 seconds to finish ahead of Miklos (of Romania) who was placed second and completed the race in 52.07 seconds, followed by Taylor Manson (of the United States) who was third and finished the race in 52.28 seconds.
